    • Module 1: Foundations of Humanitarian Action

Building a Better Response Module 1 eLearning unit provides foundational education on local relief structures and community-based organizations, non-governmental agencies (NGOs), the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, UN agencies, and the humanitarian imperative and the humanitarian principles.

      Overview of Module 1

The humanitarian field is always evolving. Whether you are a seasoned humanitarian worker with years of experience or brand new to the field, your contribution to a response may depend on your knowledge of the current state of humanitarian action and the history of humanitarian response. Humanitarian actors on the ground need to make difficult decisions, often under time and resource constraints. Knowledge of the principles that are the foundation of humanitarian work can be an invaluable tool in meeting these challenges. This unit offers humanitarian workers a chance to increase their knowledge about these essential concepts.

In this section we will discuss:

      • Actors in Disaster Response
      • The  Humanitarian Imperative and Humanitarian Principles
      • Humanitarian Reform

    • Module 5: International Law and Humanitarian Standards

      Overview of Module 5

International humanitarian response would be difficult without shared principles as the foundations of the actions of the humanitarian community. Though the humanitarian community may not share a common language, nationality, or experience, they adhere to a single code of conduct, professional standards, and international humanitarian law (IHL). This unit offers an overview of the standards, codes, and legal framework under which various actors responding to humanitarian crises operate in order to provide assistance to those in need. This unit also provides an overview of the regulatory framework and body of laws that govern the context within which humanitarian action may occur.

In this section we will discuss:

      • international humanitarian and human rights law
      • professional norms and standards.
